Vaginal itching, or vaginitis, may or may not mean an infection. But it IS one of the top reason women of all ages go to the doctor every year.
And you don't need to be sexually active to get an itch or have an infection.
Mild or moderate itching, often with irritation and without an infection, is part of a condition called non-infectious vaginitis. There are lots of causes for it:
Allergic reaction to soaps or detergents |
Wearing a wet bathing suit |
Irritation from deodorant pads or tampons |
Sexual activity |
Wearing tights, exercise pants, even tight jeans |
Perspiration |
Skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis |
Hormonal fluctuations -- like your period |

Help yourself by not scratching! That could make it worse. If it's driving you crazy, use Vagisil® Creme. It comes in two formulas; Original Strength or Maximum Strength. Both stop itching instantly and the relief lasts.

Follow these simple tips:
Don't wear too tight pants |
Buy cotton underwear |
Take your pantyhose or workout gear off as soon as you get home |
Always clean your genital area from front to back
to avoid spreading bacteria to the vagina |
Avoid deodorant pads or tampons if you find you are sensitive |

Notice an unusual odor or a discharge that you didn't have before? Painful itching or irritation.
Time to see a doctor to find out whether it's an infection and what to do about it.

A yeast infection is very common. Three out of 4 women will have a yeast infection at least once in their lives.

The symptoms are:
Mild to severe itching, redness and irritation |
Intense burning |
A thick, curd-like discharge (similar to cottage cheese) |
And No odor |

The medical term for a yeast infection is Candidiasis. Candida is a fungus normally found in the vagina. An infection occurs when there is too much of it.
What causes a yeast infection?
Taking antibiotics |
Wearing too tight pants or leggings |
Extreme overweight conditions |
Pregnancy or birth control pills |
Diabetes |
Too much douching |
What to do:
If it's your first infection, call your doctor. |
He or she will most likely recommend or prescribe an antifungal. |
Antifungals need time to work. It can take several days before the burning itch is gone. Maximum Strength Vagisil® Creme can be used externally to relieve the itching instantly while the antifungal product treats the infection internally. |

Technically speaking, BV is an overgrowth of an organism called Gardnerella vaginalis.
The symptoms of BV are:
Vaginal itching and redness |
A fish-like vaginal odor |
Excessive white-grayish discharge with milk-like consistency |
What to do:
See your doctor. Doctor's aren't sure why this happens, but you'll need antibiotics to cure it. |
If you do experience itching, don't scratch! |
Use Vagisil® Creme to stop the external itching until the antibiotic goes to work. |
Sometimes BV has no noticeable symptoms, which is why it is important to see your doctor every year for a regular check-up.

If you are sexually active, itching could be due to a parasitic organism called Trichomonas vaginalis, or trich (pronounced trick). Don't panic! Your doctor can help you.
The symptoms of trich are:
Burning, itching, redness and soreness of the vulva and vagina |
Vulvar swelling |
Painful intercourse |
Heavy discharge, gray or greenish-yellow in color |
May have foul or fishy odor |
What to do:
See your doctor for proper diagnosis. |
You and your partner should both be treated to avoid passing it back and forth. |
If you have itching as a symptom, Maximum Strength Vagisil® can be used to relieve the itching while you wait for the antibiotic to work. |
