Skin disorders
Skin disorders are a cause of often intense itching. Eczema, psoriasis, lichen sclerosus, lichen planus, and lichen simplex chronicus are examples of such conditions. Properly diagnosed, they can be controlled with cortisone ointment, but they usually do not go away entirely. (These conditions are discussed in Chapter 15, "When Skin Gets Sick.") Problems such as warts and herpes may also begin with itching. (See Chapter 20, "The Lifetime Virus.")
