
Vaginal Discharge: What's Normal, What's Not?
Vaginal wetness and odor are common problems for most women and are leading gynecologic complaints. The vagina is constantly discharging mucus and secretions as part of normal function. What is normal discharge?
- A discharge that is clear, milky white or slightly yellow/straw in color.
- A discharge that does not have an unpleasant odor or causes excessive burning or itching.
- Normal discharge may be heavier at certain times of the month, particularly midcycle in ovulating women.
What is not normal discharge?
- A discharge with an odor that is offensive such as fishy or rancid smelling
- A discharge that is heavier than usual, lumpy (like cottage cheese), gray, yellow, green or bloody
- A discharge that causes burning or pain with sex or urination
