Vaginal Discharge: What's Normal, What's Not?

Vaginal wetness and odor are common problems for most women and are leading gynecologic complaints. The vagina is constantly discharging mucus and secretions as part of normal function. Furthermore, women do not realize that the vulva area has more sweat glands than any other part of their bodies. Therefore, women who are active, athletic or just inclined to perspire may often find their vulvovaginal area quite wet. The sweat glands in this area secrete fluids that contain chemicals. This perspiration along with bacteria that naturally reside in the genital area contributes to the genital odor and wetness. This is when Vagisil® Wipes and Vagisil® Wash will be most useful because of its odor blocking and cleansing properties. Most women do have some degree of odor and discharge that is "typical" for them. Wetness is a common cause of odor and can be due to a number of reasons:

• Excess perspiration
• Urinary leakage
• Normal vaginal discharge
• Your period and discharge from hormonal fluctuations
• Sexual activity
• Vaginal infections

What is normal discharge?

• A discharge that is clear, milky white or slightly yellow/straw in color.
• A discharge that does not have an unpleasant odor or causes excessive burning or itching.
• Normal discharge may be heavier at certain times of the month, particularly midcycle in ovulating women.

What is not normal discharge?

• A discharge with an odor that is offensive such as fishy or rancid smelling
• A discharge that is heavier than usual, lumpy (like cottage cheese), gray, yellow, green or bloody
• A discharge that causes burning or pain with sex or urination

Vaginal Discharge Do's:

• Do understand that vulvovaginal discharge is usually part of normal vaginal health.
• Do use the Vagisil® Screening Kit if you have symptoms such as itching, odor or unusual discharge to help screen for vaginal infections at home.

Vaginal Discharge Don'ts:

• Don't panic if you notice you have a discharge.
• Don't hesitate to consult with your health care provider if your discharge Is abnormal or you have any concerns.
